“Every man a Wildcat.”
“We Gonna Win!”
“Eat-em–up, Eat-em-up K-S-U!”
“Purple Pride.”
Kansas State fans are ubiquitous, wearing their purple proudly, posting a Powercat decal in the center of their license plates and cheering for the Wildcat athletic teams – for better and worse. And there have been plenty of both in football and basketball.
The Kansas State fans have been instrumental in the success of their sports teams from the Old Barn where they sat so close to the sidelines that they could personally harass opponents with dead chickens or pop guns to the raucous crowd that saw the 30-year losing streak to Nebraska end on a cold November night in 1998 at KSU Stadium. They have been euphoric after finally beating the hated Jayhawks in Bramlage Coliseum in 2008 and winning the Big 12 football championship against Oklahoma in 2003. And distraught when the chance to play for the BCS football championship slipped through their fingers on the field of the Edward R. Jones Dome in the Big 12 title game in 1998.
Read their stories in For Wildcats Fans Only, the first-person accounts of some of those fans who live and die with their school.
About the Authors
Kent Pulliam
Kent Pulliam spent more than 30 years as a sports journalist at The Kansas City Star, reporting on the Kansas City Chiefs, auto racing, Olympic sports, and Kansas State during the football team’s glory years of 1997-2001. He won several writing awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Missouri Press Association. During his time covering Kansas State, he discovered the passion that K-State fans have for their school, the pride they take in the success of their teams – and the ferocious protective feelings they display when they believe their teams aren’t getting the respect they deserve.
